The 'Drawn' Series: Where Photography Meets Illustration

Time-lapse animation showing the digital drawing process from photo to finished artwork by Riccardo Spina

The 'Drawn' series represents the evolution of a moment. Using my photography as a foundational blueprint, I utilize drawing and painting to reimagine the world. These mixed-media works explore the 'illuminations' of memory, transforming a single frame into a new visual story that blends the realism of the lens with the expression of the hand.

My Creative Process: Digital Mixed Media

This animation demonstrates my process of photo-based illustration. Every piece begins with an original photograph as a reference. I use Procreate as my primary digital tool, as it provides the flexibility to mimic traditional drawing techniques while offering the limitless potential of digital media. Each stroke is meticulously crafted using an Apple Pencil on an iPad Pro.

I immerse myself deeply in interpreting these images, finding joy in translating their visual essence into a new, tactile medium.

Influences & Artistic Vision

My work is heavily inspired by the Photorealist masters—specifically Richard Estes, Chuck Close, and Robert Bechtle. I am drawn to their meticulous, photo-based techniques and their ability to capture hyperrealistic detail through the patient application of paint and printmaking. Through this series, I aim to continue that tradition of precision while adding a modern, digital perspective.
